The first week of autumn is here and so is the cooler weather.  Harvest time has come, and the seasons are changing.  Thanksgiving is in just a few weeks and Christmas is already on my mind.  Our short summer is officially over, and winter will be here sooner than we think.

This morning I woke up to a cold house.  Not quite, see your breath when you breathe cold, but cold enough to make you put socks on your feet and pull out your winter housecoat. I tried to hold off. I tried to wrap myself up in a blanket.  But wearing a blanket hinders a productive morning.  Even keeping moving couldn’t help me brush the cold off.  I tried so hard…even tweeted!  “I will not turn my heat on”.  But I gave in.  Nothing was working to get the chill out of the air.

That first morning wasn’t the only one.  The mornings are chilly outside, and cold inside.  The sun takes longer and longer to make its way into my windows and warm up my home.  The kids move like molasses in the mornings, complaining of the cold.  My thermostat has officially found itself turned on and set to a comfy 19 degrees.

Only, for one weekend, it wasn’t that simple.

It was one of those cool mornings I mentioned.  I was rushing around, getting the kids ready for school.  It was Friday and we were all looking forward to a relaxing weekend.  I turned the hot water tap to wet a facecloth when I noticed something.  No hot water.  No hot water in my world means no oil.  And no oil on a Friday means no oil all weekend.  With a frost warning in effect, it wasn’t looking good.  We were going to be chilly.

You know, you just don’t realize just how much you depend on something until it’s gone.  The oil I fill my tank with is essential to our quality of life.  Without it, I am faced with what I had to do last weekend.

Every time I had to wash the dishes I had to be boiling the water on the stove.  Every time I washed my face, my hands, I had to wait for the water to boil… even the water I used when I bathed my kids!  Though I must admit, my four year old William thought it was quite exciting to be bathed in the kitchen sink, my nine year old, Ben wasn’t so amused.  I think his exact words were:  “I hope you don’t think I’m getting in there…”

No, I didn’t make him squeeze into the kitchen sink, but I did teach him how to wash his hair in the sink.  Which may or may not come in handy to him sometime in the future.  Either way, he was not impressed, and by the time Tuesday rolled around (no delivery in my area on Mondays) I was more than ready for a hot shower and a warm home.

It was a cold weekend, and I hope my only one of the year.  My oil tank is all filled up and ready for winter now, let’s hope it’s a mild one.

The fact is all Canadians rely on petroleum to make gasoline for care, trucks, planes, boats and trains. Many of our products are made from crude oil like our clothing, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and plastics. For more    information about the Oil Sands industry visit oilsandstoday.ca
